April 15, 2019Escapade
Here is a suggestion of a discovery RV road trip in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. On the program: beach, Mariann's tourtière (meat pie), hiking, Lily's elderberry flower pie, wildlife observation ... blueberries!
DAY 1 - ARRIVAL AT LAC ST-JEAN
Arriving at Lac St-Jean, a stop at the Metabetchouan Trading Post is required. Take the time to relax by visiting the site. A few kilometers further, stop at La Tablée du Lac first your first night and to get exquisite homemade products, including their famous Lac St-Jean tourtière (a regional pie dish).
Suggestion of the team: To get to Lac-St-Jean, take Route 155 from Shawinigan; it is one of the most beautiful roads in Quebec. You will follow the St-Maurice River for a good part of the journey. And take the opportunity to visit the Village du Bûcheron in Grandes Piles, it's on the way ...
DAY 2 - FROM METABETCHOUAN TO NOTRE-DAME-DE-LORETTE (120 km)
Leaving at 2PM, you will arrive before 4PM at Domaine l'Orée des bois where you spend your 2nd night. Lyna will be happy to welcome you and give you a peaceful place to settle. A tasting of their excellent wines is possible. Before dark, take the discovery hike on the estate and try to find all the answers to the quiz.
Suggestion of the team: Before you take the road, while you are still in Metabetchouan, take 1 or 2 hours to discover the marsh beach Le Rigolet, where you can hike, swim or lunch at the restaurant on the shore.
DAY 3 - FROM NOTRE-DAME-DE-LORETTE TO ST-CHARLES-DE-BOURGET (116 km)
Your destination for the 3rd night is in the beautiful countryside of St-Charles-de-Bourget : Jardins de Lily Saguenay. We go there for picking various vegetables, grapes, herbs and - why not - some fresh eggs. The owners have also developed an amazing crop: the white elderberry. Hopefully, there may still be elderberry pie and Lily will be happy to serve you a little piece of it.
Suggestion of the team: When leaving the Domaine de l'Orée des bois, take the time to visit the Chocolaterie des Pères Trappistes de Mistassini, it's on your way to the Jardins de Lily Saguenay. Then, your itinerary will take you past the Pointe-Taillon National Park. If the weather permits, take the opportunity to laze on the beautiful beach for a few hours or to cycle for miles on the bike path.
DAY 4 - FROM ST-CHARLES-DE-BOURGET TO ST-AMBROISE (23 km)
Today, you only have 20 km of driving. On the way to your 4th stop, stop the Alpagas Là! Là! Sonia may be spinning alpaca wool and will be delighted to explain all the stages of production of this soft fiber. After your visit, continue to Ferme Michel Rivard et fille. To cooking tonight! We propose you a meal without any fuss, cooked at the farm snack. You must try their homemade chips, made with potatoes harvested on the farm. In season, you can also pick your blueberries for dessert. Nathalie and her staff will welcome you with a smile, be assured!
Suggestion of the team: In the early morning, the joggers will be happy to train on this peaceful and bucolic country road.
DAY 5 - FROM ST-AMBROISE TO ST-DAVID-DE-FALARDEAU (18 km)
After a restful night and a good breakfast, head to your next stop : Zoo de Falardeau. Daniel and Suzie have set up a wildlife observation center. They help animals in distress and release them into the wild when they can be safely released. Take the time to observe them, feed them, etc.
Suggestion of the team: For the horse lovers or for those who do not know much but would like to be initiated, book a guided tour at the equestrian Center Centre équestre la Martingale for the next day. It is on your way to the next stop.
DAY 6 - FROM ST-DAVID-DE-FALARDEAU TO SAGUENAY (30 km)
Already the last day... Riding fans will stop today for a short horseback ride at the equestrian center La Martingale, it's on the road leading to the 6th stop. Experienced guides will accompany you for unforgettable memories. When you arrive at Alpaga Bersi, Monique and Réjean will welcome you warmly and you will discover a relaxing site with a pond, gazebo, trails, orchard and of course the adorable alpacas. For a beautiful evening, enjoy the gazebo.
Suggestion of the team: To complete your week with a seventh day, hiking enthusiasts will be delighted by a detour through the Monts-Valins National Park which offers many trails of all levels, ranging from 3 to 16 km and breathtaking views! Do you prefer bird watching? Then take a detour to the Interpretation Center Flats and Rehabilitation of Birds (CIPRO) in St-Fulgence, with its aviaries and viewpoints overlooking the river and the fjord.
