Newfoundland by RV With Terego

July 11, 2024Escapade

Are the vast open spaces and wild coasts calling your name? Newfoundland is the ideal destination for an unforgettable RV adventure. Thanks to Terego, your journey will be filled with enriching encounters, discoveries, and local delights. Join Yvon and Louise - the very first Terego ambassadors - on their road trip across Newfoundland.

A Museum in the "Venice" of Newfoundland

A must-see stop is the Barbour Living Heritage Village. This historical site was recruited as a Terego host by Yvon and Louise. They discovered the museum on a walk following interpretive panels during their visit to New Wes. Located in the picturesque village of Newtown, on a small saltwater strait, this historic site offers a fascinating immersion into the life of 19th-century fishermen.

It presents a vivid interpretation of the life of the Barbours, a well-known family involved in Newfoundland's fishing and sealing industries. You can explore restored heritage homes furnished with their original contents. Passionate and knowledgeable guides in period costume share captivating anecdotes and authentic demonstrations of traditional techniques. After an enriching day, enjoy the tranquility of the site by spending the night in a trailer or RV with Terego. This stop is a real step back in time and a memorable experience.

Just a 30-minute drive from this host, our ambassadors recommend a 6.5 km walk around Greenspond Island.

Gander, a Historic Aviation Town

On your RV journey through Newfoundland, an exciting stop awaits you at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander. This museum offers a fascinating insight into aviation history and Gander's crucial role in the Second World War and beyond. You'll see an impressive collection of aircraft, engines and vintage memorabilia. Discover interactive exhibits and poignant accounts of the events of September 11, when Gander welcomed thousands of passengers from hijacked flights. After exploring the rooms of the museum, take a break in a peaceful setting, reflecting on the historical significance of this place while surrounded by the natural beauty of Newfoundland. It's a rewarding and memorable stop on your journey, combining history and discovery where Terego members can spend the night in RV.

Seafood and Sunset on Pilley's Island

On Pilley's Island, don't miss a warm and tasty stop at the Bumblebee Bight Inn and Brewery Co. You'll have the opportunity to discover this charming craft brewery and restaurant nestled in a coastal landscape. Sample a variety of craft beers brewed on site, from light ales to robust stouts, all inspired by local flavours. Also enjoy delicious homemade dishes, featuring local produce and fresh seafood.

During their visit, Yvon and Louise appreciated the recommendations given by Dino, the owner. They enjoyed fish cakes, lobster bisque and fresh mussels with homemade bread. With a full belly, end your evening by admiring the sunset over the bay. Terego members can spend the night in their motorhome or van on a raised parking area overlooking the harbour and islands.

French History in Newfoundland

Immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the French presence in Newfoundland with a visit to the French Shore Interpretation Centre in Conche. The centre features detailed exhibits on French fishing, cultural exchanges and settler life in the region. One of the highlights is the magnificent French Shore Tapestry, a hand-embroidered work of art that recounts historical tales and local legends. After exploring the exhibits, take in the surrounding natural beauty by strolling along the coastal paths and admiring the panoramic ocean views. This stopover perfectly combines history, culture and nature. Become a Terego member and spend the night in your camper or RV overlooking the harbour.

Waterfront, Labradorite and Spectacular Views

In St. Anthony, meet Monty and Pansy, owners of Fishing Point Emporium. This boutique offers a variety of local crafts, unique souvenirs and delicious local specialties that reflect the region's rich culture. You'll also find the world's largest collection of labradorite jewelry. Labradorite is the mineral emblem of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Inuit legend has it that an Inuit warrior found the light imprisoned in the stone and freed it with a powerful spear. Part of the shimmering aurora remained imprisoned in the stone, and this is what makes labradorite so beautiful. You'll want to try the homemade ice cream made with bakeapple and partridgeberry, two local berries. If you're lucky, you might even spot some whales while enjoying your snack. The view on the Atlantic Ocean and rocky cliffs is simply spectacular.

"The view is stunning. There's a gigantic iceberg in the distance, you can see the whole bay, this view is worth a fortune. " - Yvon, Terego ambassador

Terego members have the chance to spend the night in their van or RV. Hiking enthusiasts will love the Fishing Point Park Trails, a 3.7 km loop that starts right next to the building and leads to a breathtaking panoramic view.

The Secrets of Bees in Cormack

In the small community of Cormack, this next stop is surrounded by lush green landscapes. Cormack Bee Company was recruited as a Terego host by Yvon and Louise when the bee farm wasn’t yet open for the season.

"We were treated to the full package despite the fact that they weren't open yet. It's an advantage to be an ambassador. We even walked through the hives. It's stressful." -Yvon, Terego ambassador.

The passionate beekeepers offer a unique insight into the world of bees and honey production. You can see the hives up close, learn about the importance of bees to the ecosystem and taste varieties of artisanal honey produced on site. Guided tours will take you through the beekeeping process, from harvesting the honey to putting it in jars.

After a rewarding visit, enjoy the tranquility of the grounds by strolling through the flower gardens or relaxing in the picnic area. Terego members can spend the night in an RV, a far cry from crowded campsites. Less than 10 minutes away, Yvon and Louise explored the Humber River Trail during their visit. It's a short, flat 6 km trail along the banks of the Humber River.

Mainland Heritage and a Vintage Bread Oven

On your RV journey, a visit to Mainland Heritage is a fascinating immersion in the region's cultural heritage. Mainland Heritage houses carefully restored historic buildings, artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the community's rich and diverse history. The restaurant, Tea By The Sea, offers visitors a taste of the region's French origins, with traditional dishes such as the ever-popular seafood chowder and old-fashioned desserts. Terego members can spend the night in a travel trailer or RV with a breathtaking view of the coastline.

A picnic is a must at Boutte du Cap Park, 15 minutes away in the French-speaking community of Cap-Saint-Georges. Not only will the view of the cliffs take your breath away, but you'll also see whales and seabirds. You'll also be able to see demonstrations of the use of the popular old-fashioned bread oven at dinnertime and sample the baked goods.

Newfoundland is much more than a destination; it's a discovery of Canada's rugged beauty and rich history.
